The TRIO SSS program has benefited tremendously from developing a Peer Mentor Program. Peer mentors serve as informed guides for new students to the TRIO SSS Program at CCC and help their peers navigate questions about the college experience and provide support and encouragement. Additionally, peer mentors support the program by helping maintain the office and meet regularly with their TRIO staff supervisor to discuss project work.
Requirements- Students must have at least one term as an active TRIO SSS participant to be eligible and maintain a 2.75 GPA or higher. An in person interview will be required for selected applicants prior to hire. Successful applicants are expected to work 5 hours weekly and attend a monthly one- hour training. A half day orientation will occur before the end of the academic year and will be followed by a multiple day training September 3-5. Additionally, peer mentors will be required to participate in an event for new students September 9th-13th. This position is work study eligible. If you are not work study eligible compensation may be available. The application deadline is 5:00 pm on May 24th. Interviews will be conducted the last week of May.

Lead Peer Mentor- Alumni or students with at least one year of active experience with TRIO SSS
Research has shown that a “…student’s peer group is the single most potent source of influence on growth and development during the undergraduate years” (Austin, p.389, 1993). Peer mentors serve as informed guides for new students to the TRIO SSS program at Clatsop Community College. Mentors help their peers navigate questions about the college experience and provide support and encouragement.
Requirements- Students must have at least one year as an active TRIO SSS participant to be eligible and maintain a 2.75 gpa or higher. An in person interview will be required for selected applicant prior to hire. Successful applicants are expected to work 5 hours weekly and attend a monthly one- hour training.
A one day orientation will occur before the end of the academic year and will be followed by a multiple day training September 3-5. Additionally, the Lead Mentor will be expected to participate in a TRIO orientation event for new students September 9th-13th.

Plus Program Students Can Participate in a Matched College Savings Program
Clatsop Community College has partnered with a non-profit organization called CASA of Oregon . CASA of Oregon has been offering Matched Savings Accounts through several Oregon institutions of higher education for many years. If you are eligible for the program and you save $25 per month, after 6 months of saving you will have $900 available to cover tuition and fees.
Example:
Student saves $25 a month for 6 months……………………………..$150
CASA matches you $125 a month for 6 months……………………$750
Savings accessible for tuition and fees at CCC ………………..….$900
Some important things you should know about the program:
You must save a minimum of $25 per month for six consecutive months before you can use your matched savings to pay tuition & fees at CCC.
Program participants must complete financial literacy education activities and career development activities in order to spend their “matched savings” on CCC tuition and fees.
The IDA match funds are only applicable for tuition and fees at Clatsop Community College.
If you don’t comply with the Matched College Savings Program requirements, you may not receive your “matched funds”, but you will never lose the money that you save as part of this program.
Only Oregon residents are eligible for this program through CASA of Oregon.
The money you save in an a Matched College Savings Account must be “earned income” See link to IRS webpage on the definition of earned income.
