The Clatsop Community College Board approved a tuition increase of $3 per credit effective summer term of 2019. Tuition will increase from $102 to $105. The decision to increase tuition did not come lightly to board members or the college president as they considered the current state of funding for the upcoming fiscal year. The board reluctantly voted for the increase with many of them stating their disapproval of how the state government has decreased its support of community colleges over the years putting more of the financial burden directly onto the students.
To counteract any negative impact the increase will have on vulnerable student populations unable to afford the increase per credit, CCC President Chris Breitmeyer stated there are funds that the college can utilize to assist in offsetting the tuition increase difference for students in need. The Financial Aid Office and President’s Office will be working to answer questions and assist students to connect them with programs and resources that will allow them to stay in school.
The tuition increase will cost the average full time CCC student about $135 a year. This increase will give the college about $75,000 in revenue to help maintain the current service level at the college. With the state budget for community colleges yet to be determined and potentially short of maintaining service levels CCC Vice President of Finance and Operations, JoAnn Zahn, stressed the importance of being fiscally prudent while setting up our budget for the upcoming year. This increase will help ensure student programs are sustainable and service levels for students are maintained.
