Through generous donations from Providence Hospital and Columbia Memorial Hospital, the Clatsop Community College Nursing Program is enriching the learning experience for future nurses. The contributions including a radiant warmer, cribs, and a range of lifelike baby mannequins and dolls, ranging from preemie to full-term size, were instrumental in establishing the OB/Maternal Newborn Simulation Lab this week during winter term instruction.

Interim Director of Nursing Tina Kotson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “With the support of Providence and Columbia Memorial Hospitals, we are able to offer our students a more realistic hands-on experience in maternal-newborn care.” The labs, staffed by three full-time nursing faculty and two guest RNs specializing in maternal-newborn nursing, featured multiple stations designed to simulate various aspects of newborn and postpartum nursing care.
Throughout the day, students rotated through different stations focusing on immediate postnatal care, newborn and postpartum assessments, safety protocols, and breastfeeding support. This immersive learning experience aligns with specific learning objectives aimed at preparing students for real-world challenges in maternal-newborn healthcare and readies them for their student rotations in area hospitals.

“We are grateful for the hospitals’ generosity, which has allowed us to enhance our curriculum and better equip our students for their future careers,” added Kotson.
