CCC Hosts 2025 Upward Bound Summer Academy for Local High School Students

This summer (June 16-July 24) Clatsop Community College is proud to host the 2025 Upward Bound Summer Academy, a dynamic six-week academic and enrichment program designed to support the college and career readiness of TRIO students from across Clatsop County.

From hands-on science labs to storytelling through personal narrative, this year’s Summer Academy offers a robust and engaging curriculum led by a talented team of educators from local high schools and the college. Students will deepen their academic skills, explore potential careers, and develop leadership abilities.

Academic Courses include:

  • English & Literature: Students will explore the art of personal storytelling through journaling, games, and writing exercises that prepare them to respond to college and scholarship essay prompts.
  • World Language: This course offers both beginning and advanced instruction with an emphasis on Latin culture and language acquisition tailored to student proficiency.
  • Mathematics: Math brought to life through real-world problem-solving and engaging puzzles that sharpen essential skills.
  • Science: Students will dive into food-based experiments and natural science labs.

Project Groups include:

  • Careers in Creativity students will explore artistic careers ranging from tattoo design to floral arranging. The group will engage in hands-on projects across mediums, hear from creative professionals, and discover how to build meaningful careers that incorporate creativity.
  • Where the Wild Things Are: Thriving in Nature is an outdoor-focused group where students will hike, build shelters, and learn wilderness survival skills. Activities will also include community service and lessons in ecology, restoration, and land stewardship.

New this year- Eastern Oregon University Summer Institute
In addition to the activities at CCC, students will have the opportunity to spend a week (June 23–28) at Eastern Oregon University for the Summer Institute, where they will stay in dorms and earn college credit for participating in one of three focused programs:

  • Arts and Humanities Institute – Explore music, writing, language, and culture.
  • Business Institute – Discover the world of entrepreneurship and marketing.
  • Sciences Institute – Engage with biology, health, and human performance.

“We are excited to offer such a rich, hands-on summer learning experience that empowers students to grow academically and personally,” said Amy Magnussen, Director of Pre-College TRIO Programs at Clatsop Community College. “This program is a transformational opportunity for our students to test-drive college, strengthen academic preparation, explore career paths, and build community.”

The Upward Bound Summer Academy is part of the federally funded TRIO programs and is free to eligible participants. For more information, please contact 503-325-2898 or visit www.clatsopcc.edu/upward-bound/
