2025 CCC Foundation Information Literacy Award Winners

Seven Clatsop Community College students have been selected as winners of the annual Foundation Information Literacy Award. This year two students shared the general prize, while five students won awards for their Nursing projects. The winners integrated extensive research, synthesizing complex source material and independent thinking to create compelling reading material. Each awardee will receive a check from the Clatsop Community College Foundation, who once again funded the prize this year.

Winners, general prize:

Sofia Bautista, $300 for her multi-use building city center proposal created for the City of Astoria in Julie Brown’s Writing 227 class. Sofia is currently working towards her transfer degree in Business with the goal of getting a bachelor’s degree.

Jennifer Vanni, $300 for Historic Preservation Manifesto for John Goodenberger’s BLD-210 class. Jennifer is working toward her certificate in Historic Preservation through the program at Clatsop Community College. As a resident of Astoria, she is excited to be immersed in a community that cares about and promotes Historic Preservation. Jennifer hopes to use her knowledge to better serve the local community through volunteer projects and hopes to one day pursue her contractor’s license to specialize in preservation and restoration projects.

Winners, Nursing awards:

Bethany Fritz Gunn, $150 for her Mental Health Professional Project in Karson Nasstrom’s Mental Health Professional Project class. Bethany has accepted a RN position in the Emergency Department at Columbia Memorial Hospital. She is excited to dedicate herself to providing safe, effective, and equitable care to all the patients entrusted to her care. Upon graduating from CCC, Bethany will continue her education having been accepted to Oregon Health and Science University where she is anticipating earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Kyle Fujisawa and Cutter Sandstrom, $75 each for their research project in Karson Nasstrom’s NRS 232 Pathophysiological Processes I class. Kyle Fujisawa plans on finishing their RN program at CCC next year and continuing for the BSN program at OHSU. They will continue their path to become a Hospice Nurse in Clatsop County. Cutter plans to earn a degree in Nursing next year at CCC. He also wants to continue his education at OHSU and earn a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. 

Mia McFadden, $150 for her NRS222 Acute Care Professional Project for Deavon Weaver’s class. Mia is graduating from Clatsop Community College this year with an Associate of Nursing. She has accepted an RN job at Providence and will be a local camp nurse over the summer. Mia will continue her education at OHSU. 

Lane Rehmke, $150 for her NRS222 Acute Care Professional Project for Deavon Weaver’s class. Lane is excited to begin work in the Family Birth Center at Columbia Memorial Hospital in late July. She plans to continue her education to attain her B.S.N. at OHSU this winter.
