Literacy volunteers work one-on-one with individuals or small groups of adult students (16 years and older) teaching English as a Second Language, reading, math and writing. Many students are immigrants but there are also native English speakers who want to upgrade their skills. Literacy volunteers make a commitment of 1-3 hours per week. Clatsop Community College Wellness Committee and Facilities Department invite CCC students, student organizations, departments, employees, volunteer groups and community members to join the volunteer-based Adopt-A-Garden Program.
What is Adopt-A-Garden? Adopt-A-Garden is an opportunity for volunteers to adopt a defined landscaped area on any of the CCC campuses. The adopting individual or group is responsible for maintaining the area during Spring, Summer and Fall Terms.
What do you do? Volunteers will maintain landscaped areas by weeding and pruning existing plants. Beds should be tended approximately every two-three weeks or as needed. Annual flowers may be planted if approved by the Facilities Department and if removed at the end of the growing season. Please be aware that there is extremely limited access to water and that CCC does not have an irrigation system. Only non-toxic sprays or supplements may be used.
What will you need? Volunteers will provide their own gardening tools and supplies. The Facilities Department will provide bags or containers needed for debris removal. If approved, volunteers may provide annuals and mulch as needed. You’ll also bring your energy, time and enthusiasm to help beautify CCC, promote your group, build community and keep fit.
