Outside, the weather blows gray and wet, but inside the newly completed Columbia Hall at Clatsop Community College, students can enjoy the squall as they view it through the large windows gracing the student commons near the cafeteria.

On April 10, the general public will be invited to attend Columbia Hall’s official opening to celebrate completion of this aspect of the Jerome Campus Redevelopment Project and to see just how well students and faculty have settled into this new environment. As that date draws closer, the college will publicize details about the event in local media and on the college’s website.

In the meantime, even as classes begin in the new building, the work of settling in continues as the faculty establish themselves in new offices, the bookstore staff arrange books and supplies on new display units, and maintenance and computer services staff make sure that necessary connections and operational functions all work as planned. And across the street, demolition of the structure that has bridged Towler and Patriot Hall proceeds quickly while the interior of Towler Hall is stripped to allow interior renovation of this historic structure to proceed. Completion of Towler Hall’s renovation is scheduled for September 2010, in time for fall term.

Visitors to campus will find a combination of high excitement at the changes underway, and severely limited parking for the next several months. Modular classrooms fill one parking lot until the renovation of Towler Hall is complete. Despite these temporary inconveniences, there is a general air of excitement as students, faculty, staff and visitors see the renovation of a college campus that the residents of Clatsop County and so many other supporters have made possible.

Clatsop Community College is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution.
