CCC Hosts 5th Annual Constitution Day Program

A comparison of the U.S. Bill of Rights to Part II of the recently written European Union Constitution will be the focus of this year’s Constitution Day program at Clatsop Community College (CCC). The program will be held Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in CCC’s Patriot Hall, Room 326 (ADA Accessible via the Lexington Ave. entrance). Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

Moderated by CCC political science instructor, Dr. Patrick Kane, the event will begin with video excerpts from an interview with Justice Stephen Breyer and former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Afterward, those attending will be able to review the texts of both documents and then discuss their observations of the similarities and differences between the documents. A panel of experts will add perspective during the discussion. Both texts may be previewed beforehand:

Included will be discussion about the relationship between the process of constitution writing and the implicit nature and expansion of state services. One can quickly see the challenge of writing the European Union Constitution in the 21st century with the expectations of broader state services, guarantees, and rights for the citizenry than was possible in the 18th century.

Dr. Kane earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Interpretation & Culture from State University of New York at Binghamton in 2007. His Master’s degree in History was earned at Temple University and he has a Bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Those interested in learning more about government this fall can enroll in Dr. Kane’s American Government class (PS 201, MWF, 2-3 PM) or American History class (HST 201, Wednesday evening’s, 6-9 PM).
