COMPASS Placement Evaluation

The COMPASS is a placement evaluation that helps identify your preparedness in writing, reading, and math. This is required for admitted students, but COMPASS scores will not be used to deny admission to Clatsop -- only for placement purposes.

Students are encouraged to access online sample questions before taking the COMPASS Assessment.  The assessment consists of three basic areas:

  • Writing Skills measures your skills in punctuation, grammar, sentence structure strategy, organization, and style.
  • Reading Skills measures your ability to read and understand factual material.
  • Numerical Skills measures your ability to understand and work with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and basic word problems involving arithmetic. If you have additional mathematics experience, an algebra assessment may also be recommended to determine your appropriate class placement.

If you have been successful in previous college-level math and writing courses, you may request a COMPASS waiver with proof of course completion at a C or above. Submit an unofficial transcript with your application for waiver consideration to our Admissions Office.  COMPASS test scores from external institutions must be no more than two years old. If older, a student must retake the test.

  • If you are applying for CCC Admission: Applicants are prompted to register for the COMPASS test upon completion of the admission application. The COMPASS test must be completed prior to attending Orientation & Advising.
If you wish to enroll for this term... You must complete COMPASS by this date.
    Summer 2016 June 15
    Fall 2016 Sept 20
  • If you are taking the test to transfer to another institution: Create a MyCCC account by selecting "Non-Degree Seeking Student," then select "Sign Up/Cancel COMPASS" once you've completed the online registration form.
  • If you are retaking the COMPASS: If unsatisfied with the COMPASS results, students who have a MyCCC account can register for the COMPASS at any time by logging in and selecting "Sign Up/Cancel COMPASS." 30 days must pass in between attempts.
