DESCRIPTION:October’s Ales & Ideas Presents “Alice’s Autistic Wonderland- How Lewis Carroll’s Autism Shaped an Original\, Brilliant Children’s Book” \n\n\n\nJoin Clatsop Community College and Fort George Brewery for the next Ales & Ideas Lecture on Thursday\, October 3rd\, 2024\, at 7p.m. featuring CCC English instructor Dr. Julie Brown. \n\n\n\nHow did a mathematician (and preacher’s son) write the quirkiest\, best-selling story about a little girl who falls into a rabbit hole and then walks through a mirror?  Lewis Carroll was on the autism spectrum\, and this condition fueled a genius for using language–and telling a story–in a completely new way.  His book is a guide to the world of autistic children and gives us a greater understanding of how ASD shapes the kaleidoscopic way that children process the world around them. \n\n\n\nDr. Julie Brown\, author of Writers on the Spectrum: How Autism and Aspergers Syndrome Influence Literary Writing (London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers)\, teaches English at Clatsop Community College in Astoria.  This winter she will be teaching ENG 263: Autism in Literature. \n\n\n\nDoors open at the Lovell Showroom at 6 p.m.\, with food\, ales\, and other beverages available\, no purchase necessary. Join instructor Brad Menninga and Clatsop CC Art Department students as they showcase various mediums at the Royal Nebeker Art Gallery and studios on July 27-28\, from 11am to 5pm. With over 50 participating artists and galleries from all over Astoria\, this free event promises a diverse array of artistic expression. Art pieces from the college will be available for purchase\, and information about Fall art classes will be accessible for browsing and to take home. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, on Saturday\, July 27\, from 1pm to 4pm\, you’re invited to join the Clatsop CC Ceramics Club for a community art project! Participants can create clay fish to contribute to our communal ceramic fish tin\, which will be displayed at the college later in the term.
