July 5-25: Bandit Biking for Books

July 5 - August 15

Why is there a Bandit Biking for Books?

For degree and certificate seeking students, textbooks can cost nearly $1,600 a year.  After tuition fees and covering basic needs expenses (such as housing, food, utilities, etc.), the additional cost of textbooks can create a substantial barrier for those who are working to complete a degree or certificate program at Clatsop Community College. [Fun Fact: the Clatsop Community College mascot is Bandit the Racoon]

What is Bandit Biking for Books?

Fernando Rojas Galván, CCC instructor and the bike riding Bandit, will embark on an Oregon Community College Adventure Ride to help students purchase textbooks.” Bandit Biking for Books is a unique fundraising event organized by the Clatsop Community College Foundation. The purpose is to spread awareness of community colleges and student needs as Fernando rides his bike nearly 1600 miles!!

The ride begins on July 5th from Seaside, OR and is scheduled to end on July 25th in Astoria, OR. This 20 day journey will cover nearly 1600 miles and includes stops at each of Oregon’s 17 community colleges where Fernando will meet with other community college representatives and discuss the impacts of textbook costs for their students and strategies they are utilizing to help students with these and other expenses.

Fernando is expected to arrive in Astoria on Sunday, July 25 between 12-1pm. He will ride through downtown Astoria on his way to the CCC Bookstore at the top of the hill on 16th and Lexington. Celebrate with the CCC Foundation to welcome Fernando back after his amazing cycling adventure.

Updates on our Bandit Biker will also be shared on the CCC Facebook and Instagram pages. Tune in to follow his journey.
