World Literature—Medieval and Renaissance Europe

Description: This quarter we will read a sampling of the literature written in Europe during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. We will follow the development of western literature as it continues its development in Italy, France, Spain, and England. We will read a variety of texts: Dante’s Inferno, The Song of Roland, Don Quixote, Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and others. Because the written word was changing so much during this time period, we will also examine the history of writing as well.
Emphasis will be on reading, discussing, and interpreting the works. Because the heart of this course is the lively discussion of literature, your attendance, preparation, and participation are very important. There will be several short reading quizzes (some announced, some impromptu), a midterm, and a final. You will work on one short individual research project (on an aspect of Medieval/Renaissance culture) and a group project (on one literature text) as well.

5) use the language and process of literary criticism
6) understand the middle period of World Literary History (Dante through Shakespeare)
7) understand the context of Medieval/Renaissance culture (including history, geography, art, music, religion, politics) and how it helps deepen our understanding of World Literature

Course Policies: I do not have an attendance policy for this class. I strongly urge you to come every day, however, to increase your learning and enhance your grade. No makeups on reading quizzes, exams, or in-class projects unless you have a real emergency and make arrangements with me ahead of time. Otherwise, if you are absent you receive a 0 for that assignment. I do not accept late work—assignments that come in after the deadline will receive 60% of points possible. If you have a real emergency (such as death in family), talk to me before the due date to possibly make other arrangements.
