Clatsop Community College and the Fort George Brewery are pleased to announce the December event for the 2019-20 Thursday night Ales & Ideas community lectures. On Thursday, December 5th, Dr. Julie Brown, CCC English Professor, presents Shakespeare & Shipwrecks: What English Royal Navy Ships Can Teach Us About Shakespeare’s Plays. During summer 2019 Julie, studied Shakespeare at Cambridge University and then continued on a journey of climbing aboard shipwrecks in the name of literary research. Come learn what Dr. Brown learned! Students of all ages are sure to enjoy this evening with Astoria’s beloved lit scholar. Doors open with food and beverage service at 6pm. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. Minors are welcome. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at 14th and Duane St. in Astoria.
A 400-year-old skeleton. A hand-drawn map of a wharf. A doctor’s scribbled notes. A kidnapped infant. Shipwrecks and captain’s journals from England’s Royal Navy contain fascinating clues that make Shakespeare’s plays easier to understand. CCC’s Dr. Julie Brown traveled to London, Greenwich, and Portsmouth this summer, and studied the Tudor ship Mary Rose. With Julie at the helm, this month’s Ales & Ideas lecture will reveal clues to solve a Shakespearean mystery: the true identity of a character who has baffled readers for 400 years.
A native Oregonian, Professor Julie Brown has taught writing and literature at Clatsop Community College for twenty-four years and currently serves as President of the CCC Faculty Union. An alumna of OSU, she went on to earn an MFA in writing, a PhD in literature, and has also pursued post-graduate studies at Oxford University, Cambridge University, and La Sorbonne in Paris. In 2018, she taught Maritime Culture as a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of the Highlands and Islands in Dornoch, Scotland. Co-founder of Astoria’s beloved Fisher Poets Gathering and a trained deck hand tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, Julie fulfills her personal love for maritime culture by crabbing, fishing in Alaska, or clam-digging our local coasts.
