Kurt joined the Fire Service at the age of 16 as a Fire Cadet with the Knappa-Svensen-Burnside Rural Fire Protection District where he still volunteers as a Captain today. As much as he enjoyed fire fighting he decided his interest lied elsewhere and pursued a career in education eventually earning both a BS and MS in Education from Western Oregon University.
After college Kurt spent eleven years working for the Knappa School District teaching Government, History, Geography, Economics, Leadership, Digital Media, and Fire Science to high schoolers. Looking for new challenges Kurt accepted his current postition as Fire Science Instructor at Clatsop Community College where he teaches a wide array of fire topics and acts as the faculty advisor to the Fire Science Degree students.
During his summers Kurt works for the Oregon Department of Forestry as a Forest Officer based out of the Astoria District. In this capacity Kurt fights wildand fires throughout the State of Oregon as well as helping reduce the threat of wildland fires in Clatsop County.
