Upcoming Full-Scale Evaluation of CCC’s Accreditation

Clatsop Community College’s accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) is scheduled for reevaluation in 2011.

NWCCU is one of six regional organizations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit postsecondary institutions within the United States. The Commission is incorporated as a legally established, private 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation for the expressed purpose of accrediting higher education institutions in the seven-state Northwest region, which includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

An on-site evaluation of Clatsop Community College by a NWCCU-selected committee of higher education peers is scheduled for April 13-15, 2011 as part of NWCCU’s comprehensive evaluation for re-accreditation. The purpose of this visit is to independently evaluate the College pursuant to the Commission’s accreditation standards and eligibility requirements.

Clatsop Community College is currently accredited by NWCCU and has been since 1965, being the first community college in the state of Oregon to be regionally accredited. Being an accredited institution indicates that the College meets the Commission's established standards of educational quality and effectiveness, and indicates: 1) has clearly defined and appropriate educational objectives; 2) operates under conditions by which achievement of those educational objectives can reasonably be expected; 3) is substantially accomplishing its educational objectives; and 4) is organized, staffed, and supported to warrant confidence that it will continue to achieve its educational objectives in the foreseeable future.

Due to a contracted arrangement Clatsop Community College entered into in 2010 to serve as Oregon Coast Community College’s accredited institution of higher education, Oregon Coast will also participate in the April, 2011 accreditation visit. Oregon Coast Community College presently operates under the accreditation of Clatsop Community College.

The most recent action from NWCCU related to Clatsop Community College’s accreditation was on March 10, 2009, when the NWCCU Board of Commissioners accepted Clatsop Community College’s Facilities Update report regarding compliance with ADA requirements and determined that the College was substantially in compliance with Accreditation Standards 8.A, 8.A.4 and 8.A.5.

Clatsop Community College and Oregon Coast Community College invite the submission of comments with regard to qualification for candidacy or accreditation directly to the Commission. In order to be considered, comments must be received by the Commission no later than March 13, 2011.
