TRIO Student Support Service's participant Alex Lyon has been named a Ford Scholar for 2017. The Ford Family Foundation selected Alex from among 5883 applicants. The prestigious Ford Scholars Program is open to high school seniors and community college students who are ready to transfer to a four-year institution. This year, 105 students from Oregon and 10 students from Siskiyou County, California were chosen. Eligibility criteria include financial need and merit qualifications. In addition, Scholars must attend an accredited, nonprofit college in their home state and be pursuing a bachelor’s degree full-time. The renewable scholarship covers 90 percent of each student’s unmet financial need for each academic year.
Alex is part of the TRIO Student Support Services program at Clatsop Community College which is dedicated to helping first generation, low income, or disabled students, reach college goals. Alex plans to pursue a Bachelor’s in Education at Western Oregon University. “Receiving this scholarship showed me that we are not limited to the confines of our past. The Ford Family Foundation taught me to never give up on my dreams, even if the barriers seem impenetrable.” Additionally, when asked what she would say to younger students with college & career goals, she stated, "Never underestimate your abilities. You are your own person and have the capability to build the life you envision for yourself. Do not limit yourself -reach out for help when you need it. There are many services like TRIO available to help students who need support."
Her Student Support Services advisor, Amy Magnussen, assisted Alex apply for scholarships and submit applications to the colleges of her choice. Magnussen was thrilled with the Ford Foundation’s selection of Lyon for this esteemed scholarship. “Alex is one of the hardest working students I have encountered and extraordinarily resourceful. She is passionate about becoming a teacher and recognizes the powerfully transformative role education has played in her own life. I am confident Alex will be an insightful and enthusiastic educator. This scholarship award acknowledges Alex’s academic excellence and supports her financially as she pursues her educational goals. The Ford Family Foundation made an excellent selection.”
