Shelby Lofton Selected as 2013 Ford Scholar

Shelby Lofton of Hammond, OR has been named a 2013 Ford Scholar by the Ford Family Foundation. This year, 122 Ford Scholars were selected from an applicant pool of 4,085 students. The scholarship will covers 90 percent of Lofton’s unmet financial need for college.

In June, Lofton completed her Associates of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree at Clatsop Community College. While at CCC, Lofton was a Vice President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and a member of the Robotics (ROV) team. She earned an impressive 3.75 G.P.A. while taking demanding physics and calculus courses.

Shelby will transfer to Oregon State University in the Fall of 2013 where she will major in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences with a pre-Veterinary Medicine focus. She says, “… when I was five, I decided to become a veterinarian and that dream has never left me.”

Last February, Shelby toured the School of Veterinary Medicine as part of a campus visit to OSU. The campus visit was sponsored by the Plus Program at Clatsop Community College. The Plus Program is a TRiO/Student Support Services program that assists first generation or low income degree-seeking students, and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education at Clatsop Community College. Shelby also participated in Clatsop Community College’s TRiO/Talent Search Program while she was a student at Warrenton High school from 2009-2011. While at Warrenton High School, Lofton served as the Student Manager of the Fisheries program.

Clatsop Community College’s TRiO programs provided Shelby with scholarship application assistance, academic advising, and help navigating the admissions process at Oregon State University. Of the TRiO/Plus Program, Lofton said, “TRiO really got me on track.”

Regarding the quality of education she received at Clatsop Community College, Lofton said, “Clatsop has given me so many great learning opportunities…..  I wouldn't trade my years at CCC for anything.”

This represents the second consecutive year that a CCC graduate has been named to the prestigious Ford Scholar Program.
