The Oregon Library Association (OLA), a membership organization representing more than 1,200 professional library staff from all types of libraries across Oregon, has announced the election of Clatsop Community College Library Director Candice Watkins as Vice-President/President-Elect. Candice’s term as Vice President begins August 23; she will assume the President’s position in August 2014.
Prior to her election, Candice was a member of OLA’s Advocacy Taskforce and served as vice-chair of its Information Literacy Advisory Group of Oregon. In describing her commitment to libraries and the OLA Candice says, “Libraries are transformative places and librarians are indispensable professionals to communities. Librarians understand this value, and we work tirelessly through a variety of channels to communicate that worth and accomplish our respective missions. The Oregon Library Association harnesses many voices and hands to express the irreplaceable value of all types of libraries and librarians. It is a privilege to represent OLA in this work and help all libraries in Oregon showcase our philosophy and achieve our goals.”
The Oregon Library Association, founded in 1940, represents all libraries in Oregon including school, special, public and academic. Its mission is to provide advocacy, education, leadership and collaboration to continually strengthen Oregon’s libraries and the communities they serve. Key focus areas of the organization include professional education, intellectual freedom, lifelong learning and literacy, equitable access, and stewardship of public resources. The OLA also sponsors annual statewide activities such as Oregon Reads.
