New College SureStart Program at CCC Moves Students Toward Degree Completion

This fall, Clatsop Community College will offer its new College SureStart Program to entering students interested in completing a degree and transferring to a four-year college. This program uses a group or cohort structure, and is designed to assist students in completing college preparation classes, such as math or language arts, while enrolled in other courses that earn college-level credit that is transferable to a bachelor’s degree program.

Students working together at a study table

The College SureStart Program is right for you if you want to be a full-time student and are aiming toward a four-year degree but your writing or math skills are a little rusty. You’ll join a mutually supportive group of students who share your vision of a college degree as the pathway to success.

In a cohort model, the students take all their classes together, allowing them to develop support networks as well as friendships. Research indicates that cohorts increase student success. This fall’s cohort will take the following courses: Math (60, 70, or 90 according to placement), Language Arts 90, Speech 101, Psychology 101, and Information Literacy for 14 credits. Classes will be held Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 2:10, allowing afternoon time for part-time work or to return home to be with children. On Wednesdays, the cohort will meet for a study group to assist in successful mastery of coursework.
