Green Light for CCC Welding and Fabrication Program Expansion

Expansion of the CCC Welding and Fabrication Program received the green light from the State of Oregon last week with completion of a $9.6-million sale of state lottery bonds to fund career and technical or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs at all seventeen community colleges. Lottery bond funding was authorized by HB 5202 approved by the 2012 legislature.

Clatsop Community College will receive $281,785 toward its welding and fabrication program expansion project that will provide new equipment and upgraded facilities. These funds will enable CCC to develop a Welding Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree over the next two years that connects to the American Welding Society Level II Advanced Welder designation.  The Advanced Welder training will incorporate pipe welding and various fabrication techniques to build upon the skills already gained in the Entry-Level curriculum. Program and equipment additions will include state-of-the-art virtual welding simulation; pipe welding, beveling and bending equipment; additional student work space; new welding booths; and upgrades to the welding shop ventilation system. CCC will provide an additional $25,000 in locally-raised funds to complete the project.

Work is expected to begin this summer to upgrade the welding facility.  New equipment purchases will be occurring throughout the life of the grant.

Kristen Wilkin, Dean of Workforce Education and Training notes, “The upcoming expansion is a culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and teamwork among our Welding full-time and part-time faculty which will provide a huge benefit to our current and future students.”
