Donation Helps Meet Miller Foundation Challenge

Warrenton High School Scholarships, Inc. and P.E.O.P.L.E. donated a combined $30,000 to CCC Foundation in new scholarship money.

The generous donation by the Warrenton based groups was the big push the CCC Foundation needed to meet this year’s Miller Foundation Challenge. The challenge doubles all new scholarship donations up to $50,000 for a total of $100,000 in new scholarship money for CCC students.

“This significant donation to the Clatsop Community College Foundation Scholarship program demonstrates the generosity of our community and the importance of providing students with the opportunity to pursue postsecondary education,” says CCC President Larry Galizio.

Warrenton High School Scholarships, Inc. was founded May 12, 1994 for the sole purpose of providing scholarships to graduates of Warrenton High School. P.E.O.P.L.E. stands for People Energizing Oregon Promoting Literacy & Education. It is a scholarship program that provides a full two-year tuition scholarship to Warrenton High School graduates at Clatsop Community College.

When the two groups learned of the Miller Foundation challenge, they quickly came together to decide how much they could donate and thereby expand the financial aid available to CCC students. Because it qualifies for the Miller Foundation matching grant, the $30,000 donation will become $60,000 in new scholarship funds. It is earmarked for Warrenton graduates attending CCC.

“WHS Scholarships, Inc. is very excited to have this opportunity to award scholarships to our high school students and further their education,” says Julie Stallsworth, board president. P.E.O.P.L.E. Spokesperson Dennis Warren echoes that excitement. “This is huge. This will give us a cushion and help keep pace with tuition increases.”

The non-profit organizations first heard of the Miller Foundation challenge through the efforts of Warrenton-Hammond Superintendent George Lanning and Warrenton High School Principal Rod Heyen who had learned about it from CCC President Larry Galizio.

“We’re excited to have this opportunity to tie to the College Foundation and the Miller match. With the current economy, we have more students attending Clatsop Community College. The College is really serving our students,” says Mr. Heyen.
