Clatsop Community College Ales & Ideas lecture series presents Democracy Now: Perspectives on the State of the Union a Panel Moderated by Chris Breitmeyer

Clatsop Community College and the Fort George Brewery are pleased to announce the kickoff event in the 2018-19 first Thursday Ales & Ideas community lectures.  Thursday, October 4th, 2018, CCC’s President Chris Breitmeyer will moderate a panel of CCC faculty entitled Democracy Now: Perspectives on the State of the Union. Doors open with food and beverage service at 6pm. Seasonal beers on tap, food and other beverages are available for purchase, but no purchase is required. The Fort George Lovell Showroom is located at 14th and Duane St. in Astoria.  Minors are welcome.

With midterm elections on the nearby November horizon, the start of a new college quarter is a great time to examine democracy and its current status here in Astoria, Oregon, USA. Come listen as CCC President Chris Breitmeyer leads a diverse group of educators—Seth Tichenor, Mindy Stokes, Fernando Rojas, Nancy Cook, and possibly others—to consider questions of governance in our contemporary world.  What is the democratic ideal? What are the biggest threats to democracy today?  Is democracy good for everyone? Are dictatorships ever good? Can democracy solve issues like climate change?  Do digital technologies improve interaction between political institutions and citizens?  What are the roles of an educated populous and free press in a democratic republic? These questions and others will inspire an emergent dialogue, which will not advocate for or against any elected officials, but rather examine larger questions that transcend bi-partisan debate.  Come, bring a friend, and hopefully become more inspired to participate—aka VOTE—in American democracy this November. Members from the North Coast Indivisibile (INCO) will be on hand to assist audience members with voter registration questions.
