CCC Unveils New Identity

Clatsop Community College has unveiled a new logo, mascot, and slogan to reflect the College's dynamic present and inspired future.

The face of Clatsop Community College is changing. Since 1986, the Clatsop Community College logo has gone through only slight modifications. The most recent included a change to honor the College’s 50th anniversary. The existence of a College mascot was largely unknown.

In September 2010, the College set out on a path to overhaul its visual identity and symbolic representation. First, employees came together to share ideas concerning how to symbolically capture the redeveloped and revitalized CCC. This included small group work as well as a gallery walk where individuals reacted to ideas put forth by colleagues. A consistent theme that emerged was the desire to recognize and honor a sense of place conveying the essence of the location of the College.

With the ball rolling, a team was appointed by President Larry Galizio to analyze the input and define elements that a logo design should capture. The Identity Redesign Team (IRT) consisted of CCC employees Kurt Donaldson, Ann Gydé, Mary Hill, Amy Magnussen, Robert McClelland, Chris Ousley, Lucien Swerdloff, and Larry Galizio.

Central tenets of the IRT process were to involve students and members of the local graphic design community, and to obtain input and feedback via surveys and questionnaires from various audiences. The team solicited logo design proposals from graphic designers from the region with a deadline of January 26 – the day in 1962 that the state chartered CCC.

Four logos were selected for final review from the entries. On Senior Preview Day, February 17, the more than 130 participating high school students—the first potential students to attend CCC under the new logo—had the opportunity to share their comments regarding their favorite. Public opinion was also gathered via the College’s website. The logo design submitted by Jeff Miller and Darin Utti of Sign-One in Seaside emerged as the preferred choice.

Accompanying the logo is a refreshed inspirational phrase or motto that encapsulates the spirit of Clatsop Community College - - “Chart Your Course.” The IRT selected this wording to reflect both the unlimited choice of personal growth opportunities possible at CCC and the power that each student has to define success.

In addition to an updated logo, the College was also inspired to review the identity of its representative mascot. The IRT felt it important that CCC students drive the process of selecting a mascot. Web-based survey results confirmed the desire to retain the Bandit/Raccoon mascot currently in use. A consistent, discernable image of the Bandit with which people identified was still needed, however. Graphic artist/photographer David Homer was commissioned to present a selection of images to the Associated Student Government. Their selection will be unveiled along with the new logo. The name of the Raccoon Mascot is “Bandit.”

“I would especially like to thank the individuals on the Identity Redesign Team for their dedicated effort as well as the members of the ASG and everyone who took the time to participate in any of the surveys” says CCC President Larry Galizio about the redesign process. “I sincerely hope that the redesign maintains a connection with the College's fifty plus year history, and at the same time symbolizes the dynamic present and inspired future that we seek to bring to the communities that we serve.”
