CCC Upward Bound Summer Academy Kick Off

Clatsop Community College kicked off their 15th Annual Upward Bound Summer Academy (UBSA) on Monday, June 15th, 2009. The academy continues through July 23, 2009, Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. This federally funded educational outreach program seeks to motivate and support students through academic achievement with an emphasis on entering and completing post-secondary education. Throughout the county the Upward Bound Program serves 60 area high school students from Astoria, Seaside and Warrenton.

The UBSA consists of two components: hands-on learning and rotating academic seminars. Students involved in the program have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including experiencing several educational and cultural field trips, taking academic classes, partaking in community service projects, hearing various outside speakers, and becoming acquainted with the CCC campus and some of the CCC faculty and staff. Additionally, students work in teams to accomplish several community beneficial educational projects.

The students are offered a broad range of project groups, including participation in fish surveying, local history, philosophy, literature and pottery, and history of discrimination. Afternoon core classes include math, science, foreign language and writing. In addition to the full time staff dedicated to Upward Bound, all the Project Leaders and Instructors are mostly local teachers and CCC professors.
