North Coast Symphonic Band Pops Concert at the Liberty |
SUBMITTED BY: Janet Bowler PRESS RELEASE – NORTH COAST SYMPHONIC BAND POPS CONCERT AT THE LIBERTY FOR RELEASE PRIOR TO MARCH 15 The North Coast Symphonic Band will return to the historic Liberty Theater in downtown Astoria for a Pops Concert at 2 P.M. on Sunday, March 15, 2009. Lee Stromquist will direct the band and featured soloists will be trombonist Alan Pierce who recently retired after 45 years with the Oregon Symphony and vocalist Jeanne Bellinger of Ocean Park, Washington. Assisting Stromquist with conducting duties will be Bob Joiner, Brian Bergman, and Rachel Lake. Featured selections on the Pops Concert program include “Barnacle Bill,” a novelty bass trombone solo performed by Alan Pierce and “Lassus Trombone” featuring all the trombone players in the band, including some who normally play other instruments. The NCSB will perform “American in Paris,” as well as pop music of the 60s and 70s and marches by John Phillip Sousa. The Beerman Creek String Band will perform pre-concert entertainment starting at 1:30 P.M. Vocalist Jeanne Bellinger will sing a set of tunes during the concert with the NCSB Jazz combo consisting of Bob Joiner, Dave Drury, Jerry Pedersen, Lee Stromquist, and Dave Huber. Regular admission for the March 15 concert is $10. Student admission is $8. Children 12 and under are free when escorted by an adult. Tickets are available in advance at the Liberty Theater Box Office, (503) 325-5922 Ext. 55, open Tues – Sat: 2 – 5: 30 P.M. and two hours before the event. The North Coast Symphonic Band is in the midst of its twenty-ninth season and enjoys a partnership with the Clatsop College Arts and Ideas Program. Members range in age from sixteen to seventy-seven and attend regular Monday night rehearsals from as far away as Ocean Park, Rockaway Beach, and Puget Island.
