Approximately 70-90 applicants apply for admission to the Nursing program each year.
Students enrolled in the nursing program pay tuition at the usual student rate. As of March 2012, this is $90 per credit. Nursing courses are generally 11 to 12 credits per term. In addition, nursing students pay some additional costs:
Program fees: $300 per term
Instructional fees: $200 to $300 per term (liability and malpractice insurance, lab supplies, etc).
Additionally nursing students must pay for:
Books: approx $700 at the start of the program, and $100 to $200 per term thereafter.
Immunizations, criminal background checks, drug screen, TB testing, CPR certification: approx $300 - $400, depending on immunization status. This is only done once, at the beginning of the program.
Uniform: $50
Travel to and from clinical site: Varies with student location
Yes. You may work on your prerequisites for the nursing program while simultaneously working on your GED certificate. Prerequisites for the nursing program generally take one or two years to complete. Work with your academic advisor to develop a schedule that will allow you to reach both goals - a GED certificate and admission to the nursing program.
The nursing program itself is a very busy program, and working on a GED certificate while actually enrolled in the nursing program may be too much coursework to handle all at once. While a GED certificate is not required for entry into the nursing program, it would be advisable to attain that certificate before admission to the nursing program.
At this time, we are not accepting Advanced Placement students (defined as a nursing student wishing to enter the program at some point other than the beginning of the program).
Check our website in the future. This is something we are planning to evaluate and may offer at some point in the future.
Students wishing to become EMT-Basics must take EMT 151 fall term and EMT 152 winter term.
EMT 151 costs Fall 2011:
$575 tuition and fees, plus book $75 and workbook $40
EMT 152 costs Winter 2012:
$575 tuition and fees - no book charge as same book is used winter term.
Please note that tuition and fees are estimates, and may be subject to change in the future.
Clatsop Community College admits students into the nursing program every fall, and does not keep a waiting list. The program selects the top applicants each year, based on a point system. In other words, some students may gain entry into the program the first year they apply, and some may take more than one attempt to be successful.
You can receive a nursing degree through the Nursing and Allied Health Department here at Clatsop Community College. However, there are no classes in Community Education that would earn you a nursing degree. For further information about the Nursing Program, please contact Laurie Choate at 503-338-2436.
