Design Vision Summary
June
6, 2006
The
campus design team envisions an organic, sustainable campus
that reflects Clatsop County's unique physical and cultural
landscape. The design acknowledges the region's diverse human
history including indigenous and immigrant influences and
traditional local industry while celebrating the natural
elements of rain, the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean.
The design includes ample greenspace, using native and natural
materials and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor
environments. Students hear the rain inside buildings, enjoying
natural light and maximized views of open sky, river and
forest. A connection to the riverfront is important, and
the design incorporates surrounding sites creating a unique
new setting that compliments the existing community feel.
We envision attractive, functional and adaptable structures with long-term
endurance, universal design and an intuitive flow that fosters community. A
sense of arrival is important. Arriving at the CCC Campus, students feel they
are engaging in a serious and important endeavor. The design is visionary,
vibrant and inspirational, drawing energy from the site, offering an exciting "aha" feeling;
no one leaves this place unchanged! Our front door invites the community to
enter freely while also offering students a destination appeal. The campus
grounds minimize vehicular traffic. Instead, sounds of nature and human activity
are abundant. Our campus is a warm, spacious and safe-feeling haven, conducive
to self-reflection and contemplation. The overall design fosters a sense of
commons. The campus is a "gathering place" which acknowledges the
role that food and art play in enhancing North Coast community culture.
The campus offers a multi-sensory appeal with seasonal bursts of color including
cherry blossoms, rhododendrons and abundant Oregon greens, the scent of indigenous
plants, ample natural and human sounds, and multiple textures and curves. Furthermore,
the campus inspires kinesthetic freedom, encouraging physical activity: walking,
biking, and play. The place is experiential and participatory--fostering an
engaged attitude of sustainable relationship to nature and human community.
Architecturally, buildings are unique and exciting, filling a progressive,
environmentally aware niche in the longstanding architectural history of Clatsop
County. The design celebrates traditional local resources with a very contemporary
approach.
