Job Description: Individuals completing this one-year certificate competency-based program will have the requisite knowledge, skills, work habits and attitude to perform work on a vessel in an entry level position. A seaman employed in the maritime industry works as a deckhand on commercial vessels and is responsible for keeping the vessel and its equipment in working order. The individual may stand watches--conducting the vessel from one point to another while adhering to the principles of navigation and the rules of the road. Upon completion of the One-Year Certificate program, students will have the skills and knowledge to pass the United States Coast Guard Able Seaman exam and those meeting credential requirements, may complete the program with a Merchant Mariner's Credential.
