Emergency medical technicians
(EMT's) provide immediate care for ill or injured people.
They drive to the scene of an emergency, determine the nature
and extent of the injury or illness, and give emergency care.
If a patient needs additional care, the EMT's may transport
the ill or injured person to a hospital emergency room. EMT's
often work for ambulance companies, fire departments, or
as volunteers in rural fire districts.
Clatsop Community College offers two levels of EMT training:
EMT–Basic & EMT-Intermediate.

Preparation for EMT Classes
A math, reading, and writing prerequisite must be met before registering for EMT courses. The prerequisites can be met with proficiency testing, by taking the COMPASS test, or with completion of required courses. Preparation for Math COMPASS Test: A review session to help you brush up on rusty math skills will be held Sept. 6th, 2008, from 9 am to 12 noon, in Towler Hall, T305 on the Jerome Ave main campus. This short one-time only course will help you prepare for the Compass Math placement exam. There will be no charge for the class. The math placement exam can then be taken at 1 pm that same day.
EMT – Basic
EMT 151 & 152
Fall Term 2008, 6 - 9 pm Monday & Friday.
The EMT-Basic course is two quarters in length and is offered every fall and
winter quarters during the evening. This course meets Oregon State Health Division
and Federal Department of Transportation requirements for EMT-Basic and prepares
the students to provide basic pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation
of the sick and injured. Successful completion of EMT 151 & 152 qualifies
the student to take the National
Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam for EMT-Basic.
EMT – Intermediate EMT 165 & 166
The EMT-Intermediate course is two quarters in length and is offered every
other year, winter and spring quarters. This course meets the Oregon State
Health and Human Services Oregon EMT- Intermediate Curriculum 2006. It prepares
the student to provide EMT-Intermediate level care for the pre-hospital emergency
medical care and transportation of the sick and injured. It incorporates discussion,
demonstration, and practical application of the following: roles and responsibilities,
patient assessment, airway management, intravenous and intraosseous therapy,
shock management, EKG monitoring, defibrillation, emergency pharmacology, and
EMT-Intermediate protocols. On successful completion of EMT 165 and EMT 166,
the student will be prepared to take the State
of Oregon Emergency Medical Technician certification examination for EMT-Intermediate.
EMT 165 & 166 will be offered Winter and Spring quarters, 2010 or 2011.
Employment
for EMT's is stable at this time, but long-range projections
predict growth. EMT's work in volunteer and paid positions
with ambulance services and fire departments. They are
also moving into positions of providing patient care in
hospital emergency rooms and industrial settings. |
