Clatsop Community College offers hands-on field ecology class in Yellowstone National Park

This summer, Clatsop Community College offers a 3-credit course, BI 299 Yellowstone Field Ecology, for all who are interested in learning about ecology in the field. In summer months, Yellowstone National Park is a bustling area of wildlife, geysers, hot springs, tourists and extensive forests. Participants in BI 299 will learn how landscapes shape habitat interactions and ecology by investigating fire, behavior, and population ecology in Yellowstone National Park.
This is a three-part class that includes an introductory meeting (June 10th), a weeklong field experience (June 20-28), and a debriefing and assessment (July 14th). Participants will complete a series of readings on topics of cost/benefit, biodiversity, selection pressures and more. Earn college credit while you immerse yourself by camping in the park (showers available in the camp ground). Daily activities include vehicle travel to study locations, light hiking, and field observations. Additionally, participants will have the chance to learn basic survival skills, camping skills, and have the chance to spend a week in our nation’s first national park.

The fee for this class is between $474 and $575, depending on the number of participants enrolled; fee includes lodging, food and transportation. Personal gear needs to be provided (e.g. clothes, rain gear, sleeping bag). There are seven openings available on a first come first serve basis. A $200 deposit is required by May 20th to reserve a spot.
