Clatsop Community College’s Annual Mental Math Challenge Brings Students From Oregon and Washington To Test Math Skills
Mental Math Day at Clatsop Community College was held Thursday, May 13th, 2010. This year, nearly 140 students attended from 12 local elementary and junior high schools (3rd-8th grades). During the competition, the students were separated into their respective grades and once in the classroom, were asked a set of questions orally. The students then had 30 seconds to work out the problem in their heads and write their answers on a piece of paper. While the students waited for their questions to be tallied, they enjoyed snacks donated by Three Cups Coffee House and participated in a math-relay race. Prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place winners of each grade. This year’s winners are as follows:
3rd Grade:
First – Caitlin Derrey, Long Beach Elementary School
Second – Nallely Siari-Valenzuela, Long Beach Elementary School
Third – Payton Curtis, Ocean Park Elementary School
4th Grade:
First – Jay Kelly, Long Beach Elementary School
Second – Dale Takalo, Hilda Lahti Elementary School
Third – Isaac Gray, Lewis & Clark Elementary School
5th Grade:
First – Elizabeth Kulm, Long Beach Elementary School
Second – Jonathan Williams, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
Third – Ole Englund, Lewis & Clark Elementary School
6th Grade:
First – Enoch Gray, Astoria Middle School
Second – Elijah Hirsch, Astoria Middle School
Third – James Schenk, Long Beach Elementary School
7th Grade:
First – Evan Sutherland, Ilwaco Junior/Senior High School
Second – Ryan Simpson, Hilda Lahti Elementary School
Third – Joey Voeller, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
8th Grade (Non-Algebra):
First – Dale Syndam, Astoria Middle School
Second – Liam Loughran, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
Third – Jake Strozzi, Broadway Middle School
8th Grade (Algebra):
First – Eric McMillan, Ilwaco Junior/Senior High School
Second – Garrett Olsen, Warrenton Grade School
Third – Steven Amber-Voorheis, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea
