CCC Writing Instructor Julie Brown Highlights Hans Christian Andersen’s Autistic Fairy Tales At Book Signing Event April 7th, 2010

Clatsop Community College (CCC) Writing Instructor Dr. Julie Brown’s book, “Writers on the Spectrum: How Autism and Asperger Syndrome have Influenced Literary Writing”, was recently published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers of London.

The book explores various world-renowned writers such as Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll, and Emily Dickinson whose lives and writings indicate signs of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Dr. Brown’s book analyzes the biographies, autobiographies, letters and diaries of various authors to identify those who display characteristics of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through her analysis, she reveals the similarities in their writing that suggest atypical, autistic brains. The book also provides an overview of ASD and suggests how commonalities are apparent in the literature of both well-known and lesser-known authors. The book is appealing on both a professional and personal level for anyone who is interested in either literature and/or the autistic mind.

To honor Dr. Brown’s accomplishment, CCC will host a book signing, reading, and Q&A session event on Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. in the CCC Bookstore.

The College invites all who are interested to attend the free evening event to hear Dr. Brown read and discuss a chapter from her book, "Hans Christian Andersen's Autistic Fairy Tales”, participate in a Q&A session, and have their copy of the book signed by Dr. Brown. The CCC bookstore is located in Columbia Hall on the CCC Jerome Ave. Campus. Columbia Hall is ADA accessible.

There will be copies of the book available for purchase in the CCC bookstore before the event and on hand for purchase that evening. If you have a copy already, don’t forget to bring it with you for Dr. Brown to sign.

The Friday before the event, you can listen to Dr. Brown discuss her book on KMUN’s Arts Live & Local show with Carol Newman on Friday, April 2nd between 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
