From: Kristin Shauck Clatsop Community College CCC Announces Award Winners of 4th Annual Juried International Art Exhibition The opening reception of Clatsop Community College’s (CCC) fourth annual international juried art exhibit, Au Naturel: The Nude in the 21st Century, was held on Thursday evening, February 25th at 6:00 p.m. Approximately 200 people and over twenty of the exhibiting artists attended, and local guitarist Dave Drury provided music. During the event, several speakers honored this year’s jurist Laura Russo, who passed away on Thursday, February 11th. Judging the Au Naturel competition is one of Ms. Russo’s final acts in the last months of her life, and this show reflects her unique and wonderful sensibility, as well as her incredible commitment and dedication. Bill Ittman, former CCC Art Center Gallery Director, spoke of Laura Russo’s impact on the Northwest art scene, including her uncompromising integrity and consistently discerning eye for art. John Stahl of Tillamook, one of this year’s exhibiting artists, expressed warm memories while describing his enduring friendship with Ms. Russo over the past thirty years. Royal Nebeker, internationally acclaimed artist and instructor in the CCC Art Department as well as the jurist for the inaugural Au Naturel exhibit four years ago, spoke to the audience about the judging process. Having known Ms. Russo, he also explained what he thought she might have wanted to convey to the artists. Kristin Shauck, CCC art instructor specializing in life drawing and painting and also founder and director of the Au Naturel exhibit, announced the awards. Ms. Russo awarded First Place to Jessica McCoy of Claremont, CA for her oil painting entitled Bathroom II. Martha Ferris of Vicksburg, MI was awarded second place for her pastel called The Red Room I. For Third Place, Ms. Russo selected Rain Forest, a mixed-media painting by Anne John of Vancouver, WA. Two Purchase Awards were selected this year: an oil painting called The Swimmer by Todd Smith of The Dalles, OR, and an intaglio print called Monica Enclosed State II, by Rhonda Grudenic of Gearhart, OR, both of which will become part of the College’s growing Permanent Collection. Grazyna Adamska-Jarecka of Ames, IA, was chosen for the Solo Show Award, and will be opening the CCC Art Center’s 2010-2011 exhibition season with a one-person show of her large-scale figurative paintings on transparent plastic film in October. New to this year’s competition is the Workshop Series Award. Three artists, one each in the areas of painting, printmaking, and drawing, have been invited to lead workshops throughout the 2010-2011 academic year. Grazyna Adamska-Jarecka of Ames, IA, will launch the series with a painting workshop in the fall term; Efram Wolff of Vashon, WA, will lead a printmaking workshop in the 2011 winter term; and Armin Mühsam of Maryville, MO, will conduct a drawing workshop in the 2011 spring term. During the reception, visitors voted on a People’s Choice Award, and the results indicate that the most votes were cast for the charcoal and conté crayon drawing called Lotus Flower by Penny Treat of Long Beach, WA. The entire exhibit of sixty-one works of art from 17 states across the country will be on display at CCC’s Art Center Gallery (1799 Lexington Ave., Astoria) through April 8th, 2010.
