SUBMITTED PRESS RELEASE
FOR RELEASE JANUARY 4 - 24
NORTH COAST SYMPHONIC BAND FEATURES GUEST CONDUCTOR
The North Coast Symphonic Band will present its annual Guest Conductor Concert at 2 P.M. on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Clatsop College Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin, in Astoria. The NCSB is proud to announce that Dr. Christopher Chapman of Oregon State University will be guest conductor for the concert. Dr. Chapman is Director of Bands for the OSU School of Music. Prior to his appointment to OSU he served at Florida Atlantic University and the University of Washington. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Chapman holds music degrees from The Ohio State University, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and the University of Washington. Chapman is a sought-after clinician, adjudicator, conductor, and composer. He has served as Co-Governor of the Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity and is President-Elect of the College Band Directors National Association.
Dr. Chapman agreed to come to Astoria because he’d heard from two previous guest conductors of the North Coast Symphonic Band that the ensemble is fun to work with and enjoys a challenge. He selected music to perform that is exciting and modern so local music educators who play in the band can be exposed to new music. Chapman believes that since there are only a few professional wind bands in the nation, the American community band carries the flag for living composers who want their music performed seriously.
The NCSB will begin the concert with Chimes for the Peninsulum Ameoenum which Chapman wrote for a very fine band in Michigan. Another performance piece for the January concert is Basque Rhapsody based on tunes from the central region of Idaho which is populated by people from the Basque region in Spain. A fun piece will be The Cowboys by John Williams who composed the piece as a film score. The NCSB will also perform Broadway Showstoppers, a medley of familiar show tunes, and two marches by Goldman and Sousa.
The NCSB consists of a dynamic group of professional, amateur and student musicians from the greater North Coast area including Oregon and Washington with guests from Portland metro area. Larry Johnson, the resident conductor of the NCSB, will play in the horn section for the January concert, and Lee Stromquist, associate conductor, will play tuba. The band has a current need for clarinet and oboe players and interested musicians are encouraged to contact personnel director Stromquist at (503) 861-1328. Potential musicians should read music at the advanced high school level and own their own horns.
Tickets for the afternoon concert cost $10 for regular admission and $6 for students with I.D. Children twelve and under are admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 1 PM. Advanced tickets are available at Bach & Rock, 339 12th Street in Astoria. Doors to the auditorium open at 1:15 and the Astoria Chamber Players Wind Trio consisting of flutists Janet Bowler and Shelley Loring with bassoonist Kelley Larkins will perform pre-concert music at 1:30. Columbia River Coffee Roasters will sell refreshments in the lobby.
