Clatsop Community College presents Teatro Milagro’s bilingual play, American Sueño, on Saturday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m. in the CCC Performing Arts Center

You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. – César Chávez

American Sueño shares the stories of four marginalized individuals in search of their version of the American Dream: Agustín Obrero, a musician, and his sister Monica, struggle between living with their family traditions and searching for new lives of their own; Mimi, a drag performer, yearns to find true love, regardless of her gender identity; and the homeless Cruz, a mere shadow of a woman she once was, searches for a way off the streets. To realize their dreams, they each must decide, “What am I willing to sacrifice in order to make my American Dream a reality?”

American Sueño is written and directed by Rebecca Martínez. Teatro Milagro Artistic Director, Dañel Malán plays the part of Cruz, the ukulele playing homeless woman. Daniel Moreno, is Mimi, a drag queen cabaret performer. Joaquin Lopez, plays the role of Agustín Obrero de la Torre, the illegal guitar strummer and also is the shows musical composer. Sylvia Malán, plays the part of Monica, Agustín’s Americanized sister. Scenic design is by Sophya Vidal and costumes are by Melissa Weckhorst.

For more than 25 years, the Miracle Theatre Group has been dedicated to bringing the vibrancy of Latino theatre to the Northwest community. In 1988, Dañel Malán, co-founder, developed the bilingual company Teatro Milagro as a touring program to reach diverse and underserved communities in the Northwest, particularly those with large Latino populations, and since that time the program has grown into a national touring company. Since its inception, Teatro Milagro has enhanced the livability of Northwest communities by collaborating with human and social service organizations that wish to use the performing arts to address issues of their concern. For more information about the Miracle Theatre Group, visit www.milagro.org or call 503-236-7253.

The 2010 season tour of American Sueño is made possible in part with the additional support of the Juan Young Trust, Oregon Arts Commission, Kaiser Permanente, Target, Autzen Foundation and El Hispanic News.
