Come See How Austin Williams Got His Billy-Goat Legs
Austin Williams, a recent graduate of Clatsop Community College (CCC), spent the summer hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. In addition to the personal desire to make the hike, Austin worked in conjunction with the Victory Over Child Abuse (VOCA) program to use his experience as a fundraiser for VOCA.
VOCA camps are held each year for children in Clatsop County who are the survivors of sexual abuse and have helped hundreds of local children realize that they are not alone, that they are not to blame, and that they are able to heal. Austin was first asked to volunteer at VOCA when he was in Job Corps; he was able to receive his VOCA Camp training through CCC.
The Pacific Crest Trail is a two feet wide, 2,700 mile long path extending from Canada to Mexico. Of those that start out, only about 60% finish. Unlike the majority of hikers who complete the trail in five and a half months, Austin needed to complete his trip in just three and a half months. To do that, he had to make some major adjustments.
Why did Austin want to make the trip and what did he do to prepare for his journey? What were some of the challenges he faced? Was Austin able to compete the Pacific Crest Trail? How did he get those billy-goat legs? Please join us for the answers to these questions and others at a slide show and conversation on January 24th at 3:00 p.m. in CCC’s Art Center Gallery.
This event is free and open to the public. The Art Center Gallery, located at 1653 Jerome Ave., is ADA accessible. Keep in mind that due to the Jerome Campus Redevelopment Project, parking at the campus is limited. Please allow yourself sufficient time to locate a parking place on or near the campus.
