Stephen Berk Appointed to College Board

At its regular Board meeting Tuesday evening, the Clatsop Community College Board of Directors appointed Stephen Berk to fill the position left vacant by Karen Mellin’s resignation in July.

Berk holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in History and a Ph.D. in American Intellectual and Religious History. He also holds a Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling. He taught for over thirty years at California State University, Long Beach, and after retiring, moved to Astoria where he quickly became involved with the College. He has served with the College’s Encore Program and has taught Western Civilization at the College.

“I am particularly interested in the way in which community colleges develop vocational programs that intersect with the changing local job market,” wrote Berk in his application letter for the Board position. “I believe that our community colleges are institutions of central importance for the continued functioning and prosperity of the counties they serve.”

Berk was one of three applicants for the vacant Board position. The term of his appointment will continue until next May, when he must stand for election for the position.

Clatsop Community College is an affirmative action, equal opportunity institution.
