CCC Instructor To Have Book Published; Offers Autism In Literature Course |
From: Caitlin Wright Clatsop Community College CCC Instructor, Julie Brown, To Have Book Published And Offers Autism In Literature Course For Summer 2008 Term Clatsop Community College is pleased to announce that Julie Brown, CCC Writing Instructor, has been contacted by Jessica Kingsley Publishers that her book, Autism In Literature, will be published and most likely available by next year. Founded in 1987, Jessica Kingsley Publishers publishes books in a wide array of subjects for professional and general readers. The company is well known for its many materials on the autism spectrum, on social work, and on the arts therapies. Ms. Brown is especially excited about the publishing of her book because it is the first of its kind to be published. “So many of the available materials on autism focus on the clinical or psychological side of the subject. My manuscript brings to focus the artistic and creative attributes that autistic individuals bring to our communities,” says Ms. Brown who has done extensive research on autistic writers. “Most people are aware of the contributions that autistics have made in technical fields or in math and science--few people realize there is an entire aspect of creative culture--including literature--that has been influenced by the autistic way of seeing and thinking. Someone like Lewis Carroll, for example, could never have been as brilliant writing Alice in Wonderland if he hadn’t been autistic. It’s time to give these authors the recognition they deserve..” In addition to the publication of her book, Ms. Brown will teach Autism in Literature this summer at the college’s main campus in Astoria, OR. Autism in Literature is an introductory level literature course that will focus on written works where either the author or a central character is known to be autistic. Emphasis will be placed, among other topics, on learning about how autism has influenced the literary tradition. The selected materials will include both young adult and adult autobiographical works written in the past twenty years. Although this course is especially useful for the parents, teachers, and counselors of autistic children, it’s a great experience for everyone. Ms. Brown emphasizes, “It’s important to understand, from an autistic individual’s point of view, what it’s like to be autistic. I think that whenever you look at someone else’s life from their point of view it enables you to not only acquire a better appreciation of the individual but also to better understand yourself as well.” Summer 2008 registration at CCC begins June 2nd and classes start June 23rd. To register for this course, contact the CCC Student Services Center at (503) 338-2411 or (503) 338-2438.
